Our letter to Defra about lead ammunition

At the end of 2024 Wild Justice wrote to Steve Reed MP, the Secretary of State (SoS) for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs about lead ammunition.

At the end of 2024 Wild Justice wrote to Steve Reed MP, the Secretary of State (SoS) for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs about lead ammunition. Our letter concerned the Health and Safety Executive’s proposals to restrict the use of lead ammunition in Great Britain. In mid December the HSE published an ‘Opinion on the Proposal for a Restriction’, in which they proposed several measures to restrict the use and sale of lead ammunition.

If upon receipt of the HSE’s opinions it is deemed that there are unacceptable risks to human health or the environment from use of lead shot, the SoS must propose amendments to the legislation surrounding the restricted substance (lead ammunition) within three months.

Our letter asks the SoS to notify Wild Justice of his conclusions within that three month window. We therefore expect a reply before March 13th 2025.
